What is a Child and Youth Care Worker/Counselor?

Child and Youth Workers/Counselors (CYC) work with troubled children and youth who face a diverse range of emotional, behavioural and physical difficulties. These difficulties can develop within peer relationships, at school with teachers, coaches or other adults in positions of authority, at home with family, be as a result of drug and/or alcohol use, conflicts with the law or may be a reaction to a specific trauma or stressor.

Child and Youth Counseling (CYC) is a profession which focuses on the developmental needs of the client while providing supportive counseling and advocacy through ongoing familiar interactions and relationships through employment as a mental health professional, part of an interdisciplinary team centered on serving children, youth and their families.

Who am I?

Child and Youth Counsellor

Manager of Youth Programming

THE COMPASS ROSE HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTRE

I am a Child and Youth Care Worker/Counselor (CYC) with several years experience working with children and youth in various capacities. I specialize in facilitating change in children and youth (and their families) experiencing a wide range of social, emotional, behavioural and/or complex mental health needs.

I am committed to understanding and interacting with clients in a therapeutic relationship that fosters positive growth and development. While utilizing relationship-based counselling, I provide a safe space to support clients and explore issues of importance affecting them directly.

The Goals of Child and Youth Work

My goal is to help facilitate positive growth and development in the lives of children, youth and families dealing with complex emotional issues.

In today's society, many children, teens and young adults, are dealing with varying forms of emotional distress in their lives that may cause disruption and chaos both for themselves and those around them. These issues result in emotional, social and/or behavioural problems surfacing in the classroom, at home in the family and in the community.

As a trained mental health professional, I have the skills and ability to identify the needs and strengths of young people, develop and implement therapeutic relationships with them, design programming and interventions that help stimulate self-awareness, competence and build confidence, as well as explore identity, work on peer relationship skills and receive education on a variety of complex issues affecting today's youth.
